| The data for this chart was obtained by Groombridge (1994) in a study intended to facilitate planning in pursuit of the objectives of the Biodiversity Convention (UNEP, 1992). It clearly shows an increase in species numbers with decreasing latitude. Assessments of biodiversity based upon numbers of species in single taxons are unlikely to be useful internationally.
